We will discuss three popular types below:The Shoot-Thru Rest: The shoot-thru rest (also known as the prong rest) is usually an inexpensive device that creates a cradle for your arrow with two prongs spaced about 2/3rd's the width of your arrow's diameter. A quality shoot-thru or prong rest can be purchased for around $20. If it is properly installed it works very well. The problems associated with this arrow rest come with whether the feather or vane makes contact with one of the prongs as it goes through. This will cause the arrow flight to be disrupted and the possible damage to the fletching. If you are using a straight vane, this should not be a problem, yet offset and helical fletchings could be. Finger shooters may find the shoot thru a headache to use with accuracy. Another problem associated with this rest is there is no arrow containment once you nock your arrow in position. Any little disruption like shakiness, a canted bow or even a strong wind could knock your arrow off the shoot-thru rest. Once a very popular device (and still is with competition bow and arrow), the shoot thru is being replaced by the drop away rest by many bow hunters because of the disadvantages listed above. The Drop Away Rest: The Drop away rest literally "drops away" which takes away any fletching clearance problem. Like the Shoot-thru rest, the drop away rest uses prongs that creates a cradle for your arrow. Yet the prongs are larger and there is a less chance of the arrow falling off. Since the drop away is a more sophisticated device, it does cost more than the shoot thru. A quality drop away rest will run you about $50 to $100. The biggest advantages of this device is for those who use large fixed-blade broadheads -- large helical fletching. It gives much better stabilization. The biggest problem with this rest is that it is harder to install and may require expert installation and getting the timing right on when it "drops away." The Containment Rest: The containment arrow rest completely eliminates the possibility of your arrow falling out. This type of device either has contact with arrow in 3 areas or it completely circles the arrow holding it in place. It is easy to install and use and keeps your bow ready with the arrow to shoot at any time. New bow and arrow users, young shooters and hunters find this type of rest an advantage. The biggest complaint with this type of rest is that after repeated use (if it makes contact with the fletchings), it may damage the arrow's fletchings; or if it does not make contact with the fletchings (like the Bodoodle rest), the alignment must be perfect. Therefore a straight fletching may be required if a three point containment rest is used. As written above there are several types of arrow rests available. Choosing the right one may be based on where and how you will be using your bow and arrow and your level of archery experience. We hope this brief descriptions of the popular rests can help you in your choice. |
